FEBRUARY 2012  Notable February Races: Feb 11 USA Track and Field Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Feb 11 USA Cross Country Championships in Saint Louis, MO; Feb 25-26 USA Indoor Track and Field Champs in Albuquerque, New Mexico ,

AQUARIUS January 21-February 19

Last month we talked about patience, and after some injuries and disappointing races in January you are left wondering just how much longer you can be patient. Just hold on a little longer, things will start to pick up for you at the end of March, and your self belief will be back with a vengeance.  Turn these trials into opportunities by evaluating your training and adapting it so that you can find success in your running later in the Spring. Your stamina may be low the first half of the month, so plan your races for the 2nd half of the month if possible.  Notable Aquarius Runner:  Deena Kastor and Amy Hastings

PISCES February 20-March 20

Pisces have a busy February ahead and this hectic schedule will greatly impact your running and racing.  Reaching your goals this month will be difficult, but not impossible.  You must keep focused on your goals, and you must do the work and make the time for the training.  Nothing is going to be handed to you, you have to earn it.  It is important to have positive people around you this month to keep you motivated in your training.  Notable Pisces Runner:  Sanya Richards

ARIES March 21-April 20

February is a great month for Aries runners who are part of a team, and it is also a great month to meet new runners that share your passion.  These relationships will keep you motivated through the rest of your winter training and racing.  Others will be attracted to your positive attitude, and this positivity will be contagious, making it a fun time to race as a team or relay.  Between February 25 and February 29, you may experience  some setbacks in your training.  Don't worry if you are not feeling 100% those few days, because it is temporary and you will be back on pace come March!  Notable Aries Runner: Colleen de Reuck

TAURUS April 21-May 21

You entered 2012 with a bang (just ask Meb-USA Olympic Trials Marathon Champion), and your running/racing good fortune continues into February.  If you train with a close competitor, don't give away all your secrets this month, or they may be gunning for you at the next race and workout.  You are the most ambitious of all signs in February, so this is a great time to attack your workouts and really put all your energy into your training and racing.  Your training may possibly be derailed mid-month with an injury or illness.  Take the needed time off, and you will be back in no time.  Push yourself too hard, and it may take you off course the entire year.  Notable Taurus Runners:  Nick Willis and Meb Keflezighi

GEMINI May 21-June 22

Physically, January should have been a great month for your running and racing, but mentally you let it all fall apart.  You need to zap yourself out of the running funk, because February is a great time for Gemini's to start their climb up the ladder of success.  On the count of 3, those letdowns in January will become a distant memory.  Here we go, '1...2.....3.'  Everything is aligned for you to have success this month.  The motto of the month is 'Make it happen.'  If it is weight loss you hope to achieve with your training, make it happen; if you want a PR, you can make it happen; if you want to race a new distance, make it happen; if your goal is to run pain free, make it happen.   If you put in the work, nurture the mind, body and soul, you can make anything happen.  Notable Gemini Runner:  Jen Rhines

CANCER June 22-July 23

Cancer runners want results right now, and when results don't come to them fast enough they get impatient.  This could be the case this month.  Running success will find you in February if you are patient.  But if you continue to rush the process, you could potentially create an ongoing problem that may never allow you to reach your goals.  You must appreciate the process, you must appreciate the small gains no matter how minute they are.  February is going to be a good month for your running and racing, but your gains may be a little lower than what you want or expect.  If you are part of a team, watch your temper after a 'disappointing' race or workout.   Your team and coaches will be critical to your success in the coming months, and you do not want to alienate them with your negative attitude.  Notable Cancer Runner:  Shalane Flanagan

LEO (July 24-August 23)

February is about teamwork for Leos.  If you train alone, now is a great time to match up with another runner for your long run or workout.  You will need the extra motivation this month.  For those that compete on a team, your team goals will greatly contribute to your individual goals.  Your teammates will push you to new heights.  Whatever you do, don't get complacent, continue to challenge yourself and set new goals!  Notable Leo Runners: Tyson Gay and Desiree Davilla

VIRGO (August 24-September 23)

Run for yourself, don't run for recognition or monetary reward.  Don't jump into workouts and races you are not ready for.  Follow these simple rules, and February can be a great month for your running and racing.  Virgos are some of the most talented runners out there; however, that talent often does not come to fruition because it gets overshadowed by a cloud of self-doubt.  Have confidence in yourself and your ability.  Don't let the fear of the unknown paralyze you.  Notable Virgo Runner: Molly Huddle

LIBRA September 24-October 23

February will be a busy month for you, so be careful that it doesn't distract you from your training.  Now is not the time to lose focus on your goals.  You need to make the time for your training now, because it will have big payoffs in April.  February 12 will be your best day to race or workout.  It is best to workout alone this month, so you don't get caught up in someone else's drama.  Notable Libra Runner: Lauren Fleshman

SCORPIO October 24-November 22

Your running and racing is going to bring about some magnificent results very soon.  You will have a chance to celebrate your hardwork in a race or workout by mid-month.  Don't let this opportunity slip away, because this event will give you the confidence you need to attack your running the rest of the year.  You have everything you need to accomplish your goals (the talent, the speed, the strength, the mental toughness, the health, the experience), so stop beating yourself up over bad decisions made in past racing and training, and instead start believing in yourself again.  You need to approach your training with pride and confidence.  February 28 is your day to shine on the roads, trails or tracks.  Notable Scorpio Runner: Anthony Famiglietti

SAGITTARIUS November 23-December 22

This month you have the ambition and energy to make things happen in your running and racing.  You also have the insight and knowledge to strategize how to reach your goals later on in the year.  You have the confidence in your training and in those around you (coaches, training partners, etc).  There is nothing holding you back.  Enjoy the ride, you are in the driver's seat.  Race when you are ready, and don't be afraid to leave it all on the tracks or roads. Notable Sagittarius Runner: David Torrence

CAPRICORN December 23-January 20

Capricorn runners focus on the physical elements of their training and often neglect the mental aspects of their training.  They often run their bodies into the ground because they can, thinking the more they do the better results they will have.  Overtraining has been the downfall of many great Capricorns.  During February, you need to strike the balance between the mental and physical elements of your training or you may encounter an illness later in the month.  And you must find the balance in your training workload so that you can accomplish your goals.  Discuss your training openly and honestly with your coaches and peers, but at the end of the day communicate with your body.  Only you know how you are feeling.   Notable Capricorn Runners: Nick Symmonds and Dathan Ritzenhein
